What is the membership criteria?

To become a member of The Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA), you must meet the criteria below based on membership type:

  • Regular Membership Criteria

    • Individuals in the field of Mass Communication who currently hold or have held accreditation from the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), and/or
    • Those who have been actively engaged in journalism or media (information collection and dissemination) in the past or present.
    • Liberians residing in the Americas who operate reputable media outlets (e.g., websites, newsletters, or journals) focused on Liberian or African affairs.
  • Associate Membership Criteria

    A Non-Liberian or Liberian living outside the Americas with valid media credentials from similar organizations.

  • Honorary Membership Criteria

    • Any Individuals or organizations that support ALJA morally or financially. 

How do I become a member?

Below is a summary of the process and actions needed to become a member of The Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA):

  • Submission: Submit the membership application and pay required registration fees
  • Review: Your application is reviewed by the Membership & Outreach Committee
  • Approval: Once approved, your name is added to the official register and you’ll receive a Membership Certificate.
  • Welcome: You’ll receive a welcome email with onboarding information and gain access to members-only updates and events.


A certified active member:

  • Is current with all fees and dues to ALJA and to their local ALJA chapter 
  • Has attended the preceding National Convention or attended at least two (2) regular meetings of their local ALJA chapter in the previous 12 months
  • Is a legal resident of the Americas

What are the types of ALJA memberships?

  • Regular Membership

    Regular membership includes current and former Liberian journalists residing in the Americas who have fulfilled the membership criteria.

  • International Membership

    International Membership may be granted to current or former Liberian journalists who do not qualify to become regular members by virtue of their country of residence, outside the Americas (other than Liberia). 

    • International members can attend conventions but are not eligible to vote or contest for elective offices. 
    • NOTE: A past ALJA member who formerly resided in the Americas but has gained residency in Liberia is eligible to become an International member
  • Associate Membership

    Associate membership includes current and former journalists who are:

    • Not Liberian citizens
    • Not descendants of Liberian citizens 
    • Not Liberian journalists who reside in Liberia
  • Honorary Membership

    Honorary membership is granted to individuals and institutions that support the mission of ALJA either financially or morally.

    • Honorary members must be nominated by a chapter or member and be approved by the National Board of Directors.

ALJA is a media advocacy group championing the cause of press freedom through media development and the principle of good governance in Liberia.

Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA) Committees

ALJA has several committees within the organization. These committees exist to ensure that ALJA is fulfilling its mission of promoting press freedom.

 

They each play an integral role in strengthening the voice of Liberian journalism. Each of the committees is headed by a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, and two other members.

  • External Relations

    The External Relations Committee

    is responsible for strengthening and maintaining ALJA’s relationship with the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), and other media organizations. It serve as ALJA’s presence in Liberia. The Committee identifies needs that can be met by ALJA including training, capacity-building, scholarships, etc.

  • National Executive

    The National Executive Committee is comprised of members from the National Administration. It is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the ALJA. 

  • Membership, Grievance, Ethics, and Professional Standards

    The Membership, Grievance, Ethics, and Professional Standards Committee primarily handles complaints and disputes within the organization, ensuring that ethical standards are upheld. They investigate grievances, review ethics violations, and make recommendations for resolution or disciplinary action. Additionally, the committee educates members about ethical conduct and membership policies and processes. In essence, the committee acts as a bridge between members and the organization, ensuring ethical conduct, resolving disputes, and managing the membership process effectively.

  • Human Resources & Development

    The Human Resources & Development Committee seeks out grants, devises training opportunities, and foster professional relationships with

     organizations and institutions in furtherance of ALJA’s goals of capacity-building and manpower development for Liberian Journalists.

  • Press

    The Press Committee organizes various activities to promote & cultivate goodwill and understanding between the ALJA and the public. The committee organizes: seminars, lectures, talks, and educational programs for the benefit of the ALJA members and the public.

  • Awards

    The Awards Committee manages and oversees the recognition programs within the organization. The committee ensures that individuals and groups are appropriately acknowledged for their invaluable contributions. This includes evaluating nominations, selecting winners, developing award criteria, and ensuring consistency in the award program.
